World’s first inhaled Covid-19 vaccine approved

China is the first country in the world to approve an inhaled Covid-19 vaccine. Inhaled as a fine mist, the developers say it can provide good protection after just one breath.

The China-based firm CanSino Biologics says the government has given the go ahead for its needle-free technology – Convidecia Air to be used as a booster dose.

In July this year research showed that adults who had two Covid-19 shots and then inhaled the vaccine through the mouth showed a stronger immune response than those who received three injections.

Professor Bruce Robinson from EDICT said, “Inhaled vaccines may give added immunity to the lining of the nose and upper airways, where Covid typically enters the body. They could deliver protection faster.

“It’s great to have different choices and for those who are terrified of needles.”

Covid-19 inhaler research and trials are being undertaken by other countries.
